One of my last stories started out to be a simple one. It was about the effect of two factors on the success of my own writing. Of these two factors, both were variables that could be controlled by the writer (me.)
They could be considered one at a time and in concert. In no way did my original premise deal with a factor of time.
Two variables
The first article set out the two variables, the amount written by an author, and the number of followers the author had. The first article dealt with the number of articles published and increasing that portfolio. The second article discussed the number of followers and the increase of that number.
The result of the writers’ reading of the two articles, in retrospect, showed such a marked difference (the first drawing three times the study as measured both in views and reads) it lead me to wonder about the differences between the two variables. Both stories were published at close to the same time and in the same publication.
I believe, after some thought, I considered it may be that writers feel they have less control over attracting followers. But the fact is, we wrote of some very concrete methods of attracting followers, so they do have control.
The difference is time
That leaves me with only one major difference. Time.
The time involved in attracting followers is likely perceived to be more than that involved in writing more stories.
As for me, I admit I am lazy.
But that aside, I have more control over making myself write than I do over picking a method and working it for my desired increase in followers. There is more chance involved, and primarily more time involved in the latter.
My pick…
So I also would pick writing more. It makes me feel busy and in control, as well as being faster. I am, indeed impatient, as I think many of these other writers are. The sad part is that the two must work together, and being heavy in one of the two areas, won’t get the job done.
Thanks!
