This story is like all my others about Medium. It’s not written to be instructional to you. I would not be that presumptuous. But if some of it does resonate with you, use what works.
Thank you.
I am so blessed with people who hold what I write in high enough regard that they choose to follow me.
I guess it’s human nature to try to ascertain why they did so, in case it would be good to have even more of you in my literary family.
Let’s say we have three things in common. The internet, the ability to write and communicate, and the ability to read and understand.
If I, for example, were doing one of my world-renowned, deep-dive stories on cattle spit, the number of readers would be good and flattering, but in reality, if my readers wanted to know something in particular about cattle spit, they could Google it, and almost immediately have one hundred and twenty-seven pages of ten-per-page lists of cattle-spit resources and a couple of cattle-spit Facebook groups they could join.
Why read MY story?
The only reason anyone would follow me (if they weren’t my mom) to read the information that was already available in massive amounts at their fingertips would be to read my treatment of the subject of cattle spit.
Perhaps they enjoyed something about the way I communicate my knowledge. My cattle-spit chops.
So if I wanted more readers, I have a couple of choices. I could offer more deep dive pieces of fifteen minutes, not counting tables of contents and back pages of resources, thinking people need to know even more about cattle spit.
My take on it.
Or I could hypothesize that my readers may just like my whimsical, devil-may-care perspective on it. Once a writer finds his voice, it may be tough to lose it again.
I am told we, as a group of readers here at Medium, love anything about writing, health and wealth, or life and love.
But that’s not what I usually write about because I am still such a newbie at those things.
Finally.
So it’s my intent to try (key word here TRY) to write more deep pieces about writing deep pieces, concerning the big five. (And I am still in the dark about bitcoin) and yet keep it from sounding like AI did my job for me.
I guess for now, my Medium family is just going to have to be patient with me as I work at making my usual light-hearted style more appropriate for articles with more gravitas and dignity.
Thanks, seriously, for reading!
