Why My Sense of Humor is no Longer My Defense Mechanism of Choice
It’s just disappearing from the countryside.
It’s just disappearing from the countryside.

Since I can remember, any time something would worry me, or frighten me, I would make jokes about it. Or to it. And it worked!
It always helped me feel better and it, in some way, helped lessen the threat.
But eventually, there became large segments of the population who were immune to humor. My use of humor quickly became ineffective with:
My teachers- they gave me a special “jokester” place to sit.
My doctors- gave me a special “jokester” color file folder.
My parents- I have no idea what their problem was.
I learned these people had very self-centered universes, and, at best, I could only elicit a hard-fought smile that was rarely protective to me.
As I have grown older, my occasional obscure bon-mot is either not understood at all or deemed to be retirement-home-type drivel.
Worse yet, it seems large parts of us have become so highly sensitized that you can’t even make a *_____*-joke (you fill in the blank) without causing someone to need counseling.
Soon, I guess kids will have to Wikipedia “humor.”
