Recording music at a basic entry-level does require some essential equipment. Following is a list to explore.
Computer. A reliable computer (desktop or laptop) to run your recording software. Cost: $500 — $1,000 (assuming you already have one, this might not be an additional cost)
Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Software to record, edit, and mix your music. Popular options include Audacity (free), GarageBand, free (Mac only), FL Studio Audacity. Free FL Studio. $99 — $499 Ableton Live. $99 — $749 Pro Tools. $29.99/month (subscription) or $599 outright
Audio Interface. A device that converts your analog audio signals into digital signals that your computer can process. Common choices include, Focusrite Scarlett Solo $120, PreSonus AudioBox USB 96 $99, Behringer UMC22. $50
Microphone. For recording vocals and acoustic instruments. A basic condenser microphone like the Audio-Technica AT2020 $100, or Shure SM58 (dynamic microphone) $99 are good starting points.
Headphones. Closed-back headphones for monitoring your recordings and mixing. Options like the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x $150, or Sony MDR-7506 $100 are popular.
