And where they come from.

A fan is a unique visitor to one of your stories who thinks enough of that story to applaud or clap at the icon of the hands.
Clapping is not extremely hard to do, and it means so much to a writer.
A reader cannot clap more than 50 times, so there will probably be no carpal tunnel going on. In fact, the hand icon doesn't have to be clicked 50 times for a 50-clap score. It can be simply held down until the clap count gets to where you think it should end up, so that part’s not tough.
Whether the reader gives the story a score of 1 clap or 50, it matters not at this point. The reader must be unique. I have faith that most of the readers here are unique, and if they, themselves question it, they can take a quick glance in a mirror for reassurance.
The first achievement level for a story (after finally getting a fan) is 10 fans, which wins the writer an all-electric kitchen and a pony.
So let's do the math. 10 fans could be 10 of you unique readers giving a clap, or 10 of you giving several claps. (A reader who is not that unique must wait ’til the next story.)
To complicate matters, there are subsequent award levels such as 50, and 100 etc which probably bring even more rewards.
So if you worry about looking cheap when you applaud only once for somebody's hours of work product, don’t! Your single clap is the same as someone else's 50 claps in the total scheme of fandom.
The bottom line is READ!
Read often. And if you were able to read all the way to the end of this story, then you are already down there, at the hand icon anyway. Click it. Do it automatically like tipping your waiter.
Remember, this is not a drive-through.
For now, thank you for your time. (my profile — Twitter)
