"We may doze, but we never close." - the Accidental Author
“Well, I woke up this morning and you were on my mind…” -We Five
I do usually wake up very early each day, and so that I might not wake up anyone else, I lie there and think. I consider the coming day. Being someone who allegedly writes, I think about coming articles and stories. That is, you were indeed on my mind.
Then it’s off to the keyboard. I don’t mean Phantom of the Opera, I mean my laptop’s keyboard. And here we are… Then the tune stuck in my head.
“And even if we win, if we win, HAH! Even if we win! Even if we play so far above our heads that our noses bleed for a week to ten days; even if God in Heaven above comes down and points his hand at our side of the field; even if every man woman and child held hands together and prayed for us to win, it just wouldn’t matter because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Mohawk because they’ve got all the money!
It just doesn’t matter if we win or we lose. IT JUST DOESN’T MATTER! It just doesn’t matter! It just doesn’t matter!”
-Bill Murray
Frank, from Akron, asks, “What’s the deal?”
So, for all of you who really want to know what the deal is, well, listen up.
I made a bet with my brother Scooter, that I could crank out one of these darlin’s every day, no War and Peace, understand, but SOMETHING profound daily.
In an effort to force success on myself, I wagered twenty dollars. To big-time writers, twenty dollars is NOTHING! We wear diamonds, big as horse “you-know-what”s.
We are in agreement that practice makes better. We concur that a larger portfolio of work product will ultimately produce more reads, and, at least, on Medium, perhaps more money. (Although, today, it seems that applause and claps are increasingly important.)
More stories, of course, also means a greater chance that some rogue reader might jump that chasm into the private writer’s world of direct communication.
All these results are good things, Martha Stewart. Perhaps it would also be good to organize our Rough Crowd of Big-Time Writers into some type of game or contest. Any ideas are welcome. Let ‘er rip.
