Even the biggest, most popular Medium writers had to start somewhere.
They look so good at it doesn’t seem so.
We were born without a mailing list.
We got so caught up in the fact that we were writers, that we floated along in that glow for a while. We knew from the word “go” that we needed 100 followers to make a farthing at Medium.
We hustled. We begged. We combed the archives of Medium stories looking for the secrets. We came up with a hundred followers pretty quickly.
Followers
Then we realized that even having a wad of followers didn’t necessarily pay very much, in fact, didn’t assure many would even read your stuff.
Then somewhere over there in a distant stack of archived stories, one little guy said we needed a mailing list. That alerted our reticular activation apparatus and we started noticing a lot of stories that said the same thing.
The normal response is “Aw crap! How do I do that?”
Why Do Authors Need a Mailing List? Questions From New Writers #2
Two steps
Start putting your friends and family on your list.
Offer something valuable to subscribers.
“But I don’t have anything valuable except my time. Should I offer to come over and detail their car if they join my mailing list?
“What if they live overseas?”
But then the unkindest cut of all for us shy writers is when the first couple of friends and family unsubscribes.
Family unsubscribes
The emergency rooms are full of family unsubscribes.
Now we scrub the first idea, and just offer anything.
“Have you ever felt you would benefit from a close-up picture of a can of pork and beans? FREE with a subscription.”
Take a good shot of one, and get your delivery system ready. They will start coming in- only a trickle at first. Send out your brief newsletter consistently, and perfect your process as you get more experience.

Some real income
Now you may be on your way to some real income.
Just don’t fool somebody into joining your list. And don’t fool yourself into thinking you have one.
