A tool, a crutch, a way of life!

A tool
I use it a lot as a tool.
A quick, short story can be an inventory-builder for a writer's portfolio. It can act as a swift pointer sign to cause a reader to circle back to a pre-existing story that may have been updated or may just need some more views to avoid that terrible feeling of inferiority that stories sometimes developed in a dark closet.
A crutch.
I must say, I have used the short form as a crutch occasionally when I want to impart some journalistic snack rather than a whole meal.
I must admit, it often takes me longer to edit a story down to fighting weight for a shortform, than it would take to craft a longer piece. Sometimes that means I have to write the same story twice, so I can hold them up side by side, and that can be exhausting.
A way of life.
But the fact is, it is a wonderful thing to have at my disposal depending on the needs and requirements of the story. As I get better with it, it does become more of a way of life for me.
But the most striking thing for me, as it pertains to the short story, is that I did not use the shortform to write about the shortform.
