I do occasionally take liberties in my telling of certain stories for the sake of the impact of the central theme of the tale. Those liberties may be camouflaged in the action or the dialogue, wherever they need to be, and are done so subtly, as to be invisible to the reader.
To be called an author is infinitely superior to being called a liar.
Being an author is a deliberate, studied process toward a specific outcome, unlike being a liar.
Put like that, however, the two are more similar than I remembered.
