My Sense of Humor Defined

A sense of humor is a concept, not an item. It is as the difference between the title to your house being different from the title to your car. One is a degree of ownership and the other is a piece of paper.
Something is humorous to us when it involves the juxtaposition of two things not usually occurring together. In this sense, there is nothing new, only new combinations of existing material.
A sense of humor is like a blender, a mixer, or a Bass-O-Matic. It takes what has been added and mixes or remixes them.
My blender has been being fed my whole life. It has been fed things I have long ago forgotten. It has been fed different things than the blender next door or the blender two states over.
What comes out of the blender may be sweet to some and a foul mixture to another.
The observer, hearer, or reader unconsciously adds his own ingredients to the mixture as it is witnessed. That may explain why some jokes fall flat with some people but not with others.
Broadly speaking, I know that a bit of cerebral humor may be amusing to some and cause a faint smile, while a good old-fashioned butt-crashing on the stairs would cause most to laugh out loud. There is no one-size-fits-all sense of humor.
There are also certain people and groups of people and folks in certain areas of the country better left unidentified who have had their senses of humor removed. The blender doesn’t care.
That brings us to where we are now. What one person might unplug and store in the attic, another might use and enjoy every day. One person enjoys making pulpy juice. Another person hates the static it makes on the TV.
