Who am I to talk about this? (Elevator bio)
I am Don, and I live in Nashville, Tn. Like everyone else here, I am a musician, songwriter, live music sound engineer, and recording engineer. Unlike the others, I have also played with Porsches, Maseratis, and high-end homes. I have written and published about 30 books & 700 articles. Iโve started and run some businesses in my time. I communicate.
In Nashville.
There are songwriters, and there are performers.
Some cross over and do both, but mostly itโs writing business in the front, and singing party in the back, like a haircut.
The songwriters I know treat it as a business. Some are so structured as to meet with co-writer X on Wednesday afternoons from 3 โtil 7.
The percentage of them who end up with a money-making hit song is probably low, but they still write it and they pitch it.
They know when it goes public and they watch their stats page and can tell you where on the chart it is today.
But they donโt sit alone to write and then wait to see how popular the story is, they do their part of the writing and move on.
Now the performers need more attention, sometimes. After they have chosen and recorded a song, even when they act like they are just regular folk, they wait with bated breath for the next awards ceremony.
The difference.
Medium writers often have a lot invested emotionally in each of their stories. They wait to see it get published. They wait to see it get reads. They need a hit!
Songwriters here, donโt go back and tweak the title or change the chorus to get more attention. They do their job and move on. Most are not hits.
This emotional distance insulates the songwriters here from the attachment that Medium writers have to their work.
What is the answer?
The only advice I could give a new Medium writer AS a newer Medium writer is, though itโs not easy to do, concentrate on building the number of stories in your portfolio. Most wonโt be hits, but they will get better.
Thanks for reading!
