It’s all about attitude

I read all the time. When I don’t write.
When I write, I try to use Twitter to announce new stories.
A couple of years ago I read that one way to increase Twitter followers was to find a similar or interesting person and follow them. As you do, I was instructed to just leave an invitation for them, by tweeting “Thanks in advance for the follow.”
Some did. Some did not. Some said they would not have otherwise thought of it. Some chuckled. I never kept track of who did or did not. I never realized what a mortal sin this was to ask.
Unexpected response
I did this two nights ago and was met by an unexpected response that it was OK for me to follow this particular writer, but that she would not follow me. The way she put it seemed a bit condescending to me at the time, and I tweeted that *crickets* would have been a more polite response.
An angry group of this writer's friends came to her defense and soon became a bit frenzied. They brought my race and my gender and whatever else they could think of into the fray.

It got quite funny to me, as a quasi-humorist/essayist/writer. Every time I would walk through that room where that computer was, I would look to see if they were still worked up. They were still going. So I would poke the hive with another tweet again, and go.
They remained in a self-feeding frenzy most of the day, repeating the same tweets and retweets to each other. And each time I walked through, there they were, so I would poke them again.
This was so much fun, and I even started receiving some threats to make me delete my messages. I tried to tell them all day I was just goofing with them, but they were way past that. They were only hearing themselves. So have another poke.
20% increase
When the day ended, though my followers in this particular account had gone from 500 to 598. Impressions of some tweets had gotten into the thousands. Twitter asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the Professional App.
This whole day was not planned. I never said anything out of line. I never used foul or incendiary language. I never said anything I would not want my mom or my daughters to see. So I can’t really tell you how I could recreate the event, but it was great.
I do have to point out, that there exists a small group of writers on Twitter who are very excitable. Somehow I found them. I just hope they like my Medium stories.
