IS MEDIUM'S ALGORITHM SUDDENLY PAYING ME A LOT LESS FOR THE SAME NUMBER OF READS?
I am usually tenacious and definitely not a whiner, BUT...
I do try to keep track of what I do and the results I get.
And I am getting less income for the number of stories and the reads I get. I know I am not the super-star type who makes videos of my stories or gets top-wrIter awards. I’m just a worker bee who buzzes around, and brings home the honey.
Word on the street is just that. It is a word and it’s on the street.
It does seem that other writers are noticing the same thing, too.
The question you need to ask yourself is whether your writing interests people enough to read all the way to the end, or at least as much as they used to, or is your writing encouraging readers to skim more?
Do you have and answer as many comments as before? Do you just copy and paste a “thank you” or do you have a quasi-conversation?
You need to realize that every month, there are more writers at Medium, so the competition is more as time goes by.
I have also noticed in my one-to-one business, as well as possibly my writing business, that people, even those who ask a question, don’t want to spend time listening to an answer. they just want to get in and get out.
And finally, I am quite sure any nuanced changes in the algorithm are so far above my pay grade, as to all but conceal themselves from me, so I won’t worry about those here.
What am I doing about it?
I don’t believe grass-is-greener platform hopping will get me anything but complications. I may add a minor platform sometimes, but I have too much invested here to hop away.
I will strive to write an extra story or two a week.
I will try to link more of my own stories to my new stories.
I will offer more or better products of my own, like the microbooks of which I have grown so fond. amd other residual income merch.
I expect this phase, too, will pass.
