“How Writing Can Boost Your Social Security Income (Without Losing Your Benefits)”
HELLO, RETIREMENT!

“How Writing Can Boost Your Social Security Income (Without Losing Your Benefits)”
Social Security checks are helpful, but let’s be honest, they’re often not enough to keep up with bills, inflation, or unexpected expenses.
The good news? You don’t have to go back to a full-time job to earn extra income. If you enjoy writing, or even just have stories, skills, or advice to share. You can use it to create small, steady income streams that add to your Social Security.
HOW WRITING CAN HELP YOU EARN MORE
1. No commute, no clock-punching
You write from home, in your robe, at your pace.
If you have mobility issues or fatigue, this is a big ol’ win.
2. You control how much or how little you work
Write a blog, publish a short book, post on Medium, or send a newsletter, or do them all.
A few hours a week can lead to a consistent monthly income.
3. Low overhead
You don’t need special equipment or a big investment.
Just a computer (or tablet, or laptop) and an internet connection wherever you will write.
HOW IT BOOSTS INCOME (WITHOUT HURTING BENEFITS)
If you’re over full retirement age (67 or so)
You can earn as much as you want from writing — your Social Security check doesn’t shrink.
If you’re under full retirement age and collecting early.
You can still write and earn money, but there’s an income limit ($22,000/year in 2025) before SS deducts a portion.
Pro Tip- Passive income (like royalties) often doesn’t count toward the limit.
Always check with a tax advisor, but writing income from books, Substack, Medium, Gumroad, etc. is usually self-employment income, and you’ll file a simple Schedule C.
