How I Keep Track of my Stories, Past and Future
Maybe the only thing I haven’t changed in the last year…
I told you a year ago about having a small notebook that fits in my pocket and goes with me daily for “things to do” and emergency scribbles. Each of them last about a quarter (of a year.)
Then I keep their larger brothers at my office, one for a prayer list/inventory list/ bank journal. The other two are different. One is for story ideas, beginnings, and drafts to noodle around with.
The last is just for flashes of ideas. It’s the least organized of all, just a place for me to tuck away goofy ideas that show up on my mental doorstep. This notebook parallels and was aided by the squirrel notebook from August Birch, a great content creator I try to emulate when I can.
I think you can tell in descending order, they are drafts, squirrelly, and business. Mine almost self-identify. (I told you long ago I was a visual learner.)
The incredible thing to me is the fact that these have remained unchanged for a year because they work. It is one thing I like enough that doesn’t cry out to be better.
They mostly stay out of the way and quiet at the office. The only one I need to think about is the small pocket notebook. Transfers, if needed can be done at night.
If you are a writer, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t organize your ideas.
