I work with some new writers, not necessarily as a writing instructor, but rather, in the capacity of one who has been there, done that awhile, and doesn’t mind sharing some of his experiences.
I share this secret.
Today, I share this secret. When I wake up at sunrise, and realize I haven’t published anything yet that day, even a short piece can prime the pump for both the writer and the reader.
Therefore, I often sharpen my focus first, with this hack I learned at the Piggly Wiggly School of Writing.
Piggly Wiggly.
I imagine my journalistic self at the Piggly Wiggly picking up a steak, a potato, and a big onion. The check-out counter has a big button that says “Publish” to push when all is tallied.
But as I push my cart toward the cashier, there are packs of chewing gum, candy bars, and magazines crying out to be included in my basket. I admit that I’m a pushover for a sobbing Reese’s Cup wanting a new home.
I begin by typing a couple or three main points in my story and start filling in the details, as they jump into my story-cart. I know where I’m going (a steak dinner,) but the interesting details can change on the way before I get there.
Last words.
I do have a big belly as well as a big tent, so together we craft the message of our shopping cart, often by accident, and we’re off to publication!
