How Can a Free-Lance Writer Make the VERY FIRST Dollar? (BTWriter Club 🔒)
When Starting Out.
Making your first dollar as a writer can be a rewarding and achievable goal. Here are a few steps you can take to start earning income through your writing.
Identify Your Niche. Determine what you want to write about and find a niche that interests you and has some potential demand. Consider your expertise, hobbies, or areas of passion when choosing.
Create a Your Portfolio. Before you can start earning money, you do need to have some writing samples that showcase your skills. Write articles, blog posts, or any other content in your chosen niche and create a portfolio to share with any potential clients or publishers.
Freelance Writing. One of the quickest ways to make your first dollar as a writer is through freelance writing. Websites like UPWORK, FREELANCER, and FIVERR connect writers with clients looking for pieces of content. You can bid on writing projects and possibly build a client base over time.
Content Mills. While not the most lucrative option, content farms like TEXTBROKER and iWRITER offer opportunities for new writers to write articles for pay. These platforms typically pay per word, and while the rates may be low, they can help you gain experience.
Guest Blogging. Reach out to different blogs and websites in your niche area, and offer to write guest posts for them. Some may even pay for your contributions, while others only offer exposure and a byline.
Self-Publishing. If you have a book or e-book idea, consider self-publishing on platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) or other self-publishing services. You can earn royalties from book sales.
Content Creation for Existing Websites. Many businesses and website owners are looking for content writers. You can offer your writing services directly to website owners, or work through platforms like CONTENTWRITERS or CONSTANT CONTENT.
Write for Local Publications in your Town. Approach local newspapers, magazines, or community newsletters and offer your writing services for local stories or features.
Create a Blog or Website. Start your own blog or website focused on your niche. You can monetize your blog through advertising, sponsored content, affiliate marketing, or selling digital products.
Social Media and Content Platforms. Consider platforms like Medium, Vocal Media, or Substack, where you can earn money based on the number of readers and engagement with your articles.
Online Courses and Ebooks. If you have specialized knowledge, create online courses or ebooks and sell them through platforms like Udemy, Teachable, or Amazon.
Pitch Articles to Magazines and Online Publications. Promote your story ideas or articles to magazines, newspapers, or online publications that pay for freelance contributions.
Networking. Attend writing conferences, join writing groups, and try to network with other writers. Sometimes, opportunities arise through connections and referrals.
Keep Learning. Continually improve your writing skills by taking online courses, reading books on writing, and staying updated on industry trends.
Making your first dollar as a writer requires persistence and patience. It may take some time to establish yourself and build a consistent income stream, but with dedication and a strong portfolio, you can turn your passion for writing into a profitable endeavor. Find a place you can write and publish as often as you can, and start keeping your writings in a portfolio for future use.

I love writing. I'm terrible at finding and keeping up with comments and conversations. They can come from so many places. I know I must have some folks who think I am a snob when I'm really just looking the other way at the time they said something, or I hadn't discovered HOW to answer yet.
Great advice, Don. I'm doing some of that stuff now and am looking into things that are new to me.
