When I was smaller, there were a lot of things I desired.
Ask my parents.
About the only way I could get anything, though, was to ask my parents for it.
Then, sometimes I could get it, and sometimes not. It was all dependent on what seemed to me to be a capricious standard and an unpredictable set of circumstances.
Part of my getting a bit older was learning that there were certain ways I could ask for the item of my desire that would make it more likely I could get what I wanted.
As I grew another year or so, I realized that there were certain ways I could ask, and further, there were certain things I could do, before I asked, that would help my chances. I could take out the trash. I could make my bed.
A process.
Gradually I realized the process. If I wanted x, I still had to ask my parents, but the checklist for getting what I wanted had to include asking in a certain manner after I had completed a sort-of checklist of pre-request items.
So, without actually being told, I found a huge difference between just wanting something and actually doing what it took to get it.
These days, though it may sound backward, I understand the difference between a desire and making that desire into a goal. Itโs the difference between putting a picture of a book on my bathroom mirror and actually listing out and doing the steps it takes to write that book.
Thatโs all there is.
Write it down. Check off the steps. Now youโre on the way.
