New writers, planners, and goal-setting self-improvers- DO NOT RISK AN FTC! It will sink your efforts.
We all know and have heard many times to make our goals “SMART.” Click here to see info.
The trouble comes with the “T.” Time-bound. We all interpret it to mean the time we expect to accomplish the goal, but what if our goal is some change in our daily routine?
What if we wanted to write daily, for instance?
The first day is no problem, even though it’s only one day, we did it. What if we meant to write daily from henceforth? We can’t even measure that success, much less accomplish it.
So the trick is to also time-bind a period of time for a change to our ongoing processes, and put a cap on it. I am going to write every day in the month of January. Like a challenge. Keep a record. Publish it for the feeling of accountability even if you have no accountability partners.
The only thing we as newbies are trying to avoid is the dreaded FTC, a Failure To Complete. This makes us feel much worse instead of helping. This is a drawback to practicing or building online, in public concept.
It is so easy to get derailed and lose our goal, especially if that goal is to do something every day. We may know it’s good for us, but oh, the public humiliation!
It can be so fearsome that I have addressed it previously here.
