If you look at my personal Facebook page, I have a bunch of friends. OK, it’s fewer than 5000, because it’s still my personal page, but it’s still a lot of people.
And I have a presence on several other platforms.
What I post consists of pix of my family and shares of funny, other posts. I have no politics, obscenity, or porn. Nothing offensive.
Most of what I post or share gets “thumbs up.”
In the beginning.
When I first began writing and publishing, it was a novelty, and a few of my friends got a book and gave me a good Amazon review.
Many of us writers have very healthy Impostor Complexes. We don’t feel right talking to or pitching our friends on our craft.
So, while I began NOT speaking about my writing to my friends, it seemed to them the novelty wore off quickly. It was replaced by more of a feeling that while they were working their job, I was sitting back and making a fortune dashing off stories. The novelty may have turned into resentment and some of my friends started to avoid me because they thought I would soon be asking them to buy something, even though I never had. Giving me a “like” didn’t cost them anything.
Of course, there is also the factor that after a couple of my friends discovered how dreadful my books were, they thought it much safer to hide from me.
The writing theorists tell you to start a newsletter and tell your friends about your new venture. THAT’S NOT RIGHT.
You will end up with a bad feeling about your friends, or a bad feeling about your writing, or both, and neither is helpful to you.
The bottom line for your newsletter, stories or books.
Start with a clean slate. Write as much as you can and as well as you can.
Put a link to your stuff EVERYWHERE.
We’ll talk about “everywhere” next.
